How an appraisal works

Considered at every step.

A clear, methodical engagement — from the first conversation to a finished report you can rely on. Here is what to expect, and what makes a report defensible.

1

Consultation

We discuss your items and the purpose of the appraisal, agree the scope and the correct definition of value, and confirm the fee and timeline in writing.

2

Examination

On-site or remotely, each item is inspected, measured, and photographed, with notes on materials, marks, signatures, condition, and any provenance you can provide.

3

Research & Market Analysis

We research makers, comparable sales, and current market conditions to reach a supported, well-reasoned opinion of value for the correct market.

4

USPAP-Compliant Report

Findings are documented in a clear written report — descriptions, photographs, value conclusions, methodology, and the appraiser's qualifications and certification.

5

Confidential Delivery

You receive your report securely and privately, ready for its intended use. We remain available for questions, updates, and any follow-on need.

On-site & remote

We come to you — or work from documentation.

For estates and collections we travel to examine items in place. For individual pieces, a remote appraisal from detailed photographs and records is often appropriate.

  • On-site examination for estates, collections, and high-value items
  • Remote and desktop appraisals where suitable
  • Careful, photographed documentation of every item
  • Deadlines for insurance, estate, and tax filings respected
Good to know

Common questions.

Professional appraisals are billed by the hour or as a flat project fee based on the number and complexity of items — never as a percentage of value, which would conflict with USPAP. We quote the fee in writing after a brief consultation, so there are no surprises.
A single item or small group can often be completed within one to two weeks of examination; larger estates take longer because of the research involved. We confirm a realistic timeline up front and accommodate urgent estate and insurance deadlines where possible.
For most assignments a hands-on examination produces the most reliable result, and we travel on-site for estates and collections. For some items a remote or desktop appraisal is appropriate using detailed photographs and documentation — we'll advise which approach suits your purpose.
A verbal or auction estimate is an informal opinion. A formal appraisal is a written, signed report prepared in compliance with USPAP — with a stated value definition, effective date, methodology, and supporting evidence — the form required by insurers, the IRS, and the courts.
Yes. Client identity, item details, and values are held in strict confidence and shared only with the parties you authorize. Discretion is fundamental to how we work.
